CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Slippery Rock University opened its 2012 season Saturday afternoon with a 4-2, 5-4 doubleheader sweep of NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rival Ohio Valley University of West Virginia at VA Memorial Stadium.

Sophomore right-hander Lou Trivino pitched a complete-game and sophomore Brandon Myers smacked a home run and collected two RBIs to lead the winning effort in Game 1.

Senior southpaw Zach Jeney picked up the Game 2 win after pitching four innings in relief. Junior first baseman John Shaffer had two doubles to lead the offensive attack.

Senior captain Carter Haponski (pictured) had a pair of hits in each game to lead The Rock effort for the day.

The Rock returns to VA Memorial Park Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader vs. regional rival Wheeling Jesuit University (W. Va.).

Trivino, an all-conference and all-region performer last spring, picked up right where he left off as he struck out eight, walked only one and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in a seven-inning route-going effort.

Myers' home run tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Haponski had a double and a single in the game and senior Lee Foxton added two singles.

Jeney relieved starter Nic McCowin and limited OVU to only two hits while striking out four and walking one in four scoreless innings of relief work. McCowin yielded four runs (two earned) on three hits, struck out two and walked three in the first three innings.

Shaffer had three hits in the second game and picked up two RBIs, while Haponski and sophomore Will Kengor each added a pair of hits and collected one RBI.

The Rock trailed by a 4-2 score going into the sixth inning before scoring three unanswered runs to record the win. Kengor's one-out single in the top of the seventh broke a 4-4 deadlock and plated the winning run.

SRU had a total of 17 hits in its first two games of the season, eight in Game 1 and nine in Game 2, while Rock pitchers held OVU to a total of nine hits.
