Pratt's 20 points help propel Rock men past Edinboro, 76-68

Freshman Chaquille Pratt recorded a season-high point total to lead a list of three Rock players with double-figure scoring efforts in Saturday's PSAC-West win


EDINBORO, Pa. – Freshman Chaquille Pratt came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points Saturday afternoon and lead Slippery Rock University to a 76-68 win over hosting Edinboro University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division men's basketball action.

Pratt made five of six shots from the field, nailed his only 3-point attempt and sank nine of 10 free throws, He was one of three Rock players who finished the game with a double-digit scoring total.

Junior Aubin Reeves and senior Devin Taylor (pictured) each scored 16 points for SRU (15-7 overall, 12-6 PSAC), which recorded its third straight win and 10th in the last 13 games and remained in sole possession of third place in the division standings.

Taylor also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to record his team-best 10th “double-double” of the season. Reeves had five rebounds and four assists.

Juniors Tabari Perry and Luiz Santos each added nine points as part of The Rock's balanced scoring attack. They also snared nine and eight rebounds, respectively, to help The Rock to a 48-30 rebounding advantage.

The Rock shot 44% (29-66) from the field, made four of 12 shots from 3-point range, sank 14 of 19 (74%) free throws and committed 13 turnovers.

SRU will look to move one step closer to clinching its second consecutive PSAC tournament berth and third in Kevin Reynolds' four seasons as head coach when it hosts California (Pa.) in an 8 p.m. game Wednesday in Morrow Field House.

California (14-10, 11-7 PSAC), which beat division cellar-dwellar Lock Haven (0-21, 0-18 PSAC) by a 77-52 score Saturday, began the day tied with Clarion (14-9, 10-7 PSAC) for fourth place in the division standings. Clarion hosted Gannon in Saturday night action.

Isaiah Prince scored a game-high 22 points Saturday for Edinboro (11-11, 9-9 PSAC), which suffered its second straight loss. Clint Nicholson added 18 points and Cory Somerville finished with seven points and seven rebounds.

Somerville played for The Rock in 2007-08 before transferring to Edinboro.

The Fighting Scots, who missed 10 of their first 11 shots from the floor Saturday, shot 38% (23-61) from the field, hit six of 23 (26%) shots from long range, made 16 of 19 (84%) free throws and turned the ball over 11 times.

The Rock scored the first basketball of the game and then, after Edinboro had tied the score at 2-2, ran off 12 unanswered points to take a 14-2 lead after six minutes had elapsed off the game clock.

Edinboro crawled its way back to within six points, 22-16, with 8:15 remaining in the first half, only to see SRU go on a 10-3 run to push the margin back to double figures.

The guests took a 10-point, 36-26, advantage into the intermission thanks to a balanced scoring attack. Four Rock players finished the first half with five or more points, led by Reeves with 10. Pratt added nine points, Taylor had seven points and seven rebounds and Santos had five points and six rebounds.

Behind the lead of Taylor and Santos, The Rock had a 27-19 rebounding advantage at the intermission.

The Rock made 42% (16-38) of their field-goal attempts, hit three of 11 (27%) shots from 3-point range and were 1-of-3 from the foul line in the first half.

Edinboro made 29% (9-31) of its action shots in the first half. The Fighting Scots were 2-of-11 (18%) from 3-point range and made six of nine free throws.

Both teams took good care of the basketball in the first half as each squad finished the stanza with only three turnovers.

SRU scored seven of the first 10 second-half points to push its lead to 14 points, 43-29, with 17:45 left to play and never led by less than seven points the rest of the way.

An 8-0 run midway through the final half gave SRU its largest lead of the game, a 17-point, 63-46, advantage with 7:15 remaining.

Notes:

Pratt's point total Saturday bettered his previous best of 12 points set last Wednesday in Lock Haven and put him in prime position to earn PSAC-West Freshman of the Week honors … Prior to his back-to-back double-figure scoring efforts this week, the only other time Pratt scored 10 or more points was Dec. 10 at Mansfield, when he scored exactly 10 points ... Taylor, the only PSAC player to currently average a double-double, has now scored 10 or more points in 14 games and grabbed 10 or more points in 14 games this winter ... The Rock began Saturday three games behind division-leading and 13th-ranked Indiana, Pa. (17-4, 14-3) and two games behind second-place Mercyhurst (15-6, 13-4) in the division standings. Those two teams met head-on Saturday night in Indiana … The Rock, after hosting California Wednesday, travel to Indiana for a 7:30 p.m. game next Saturday. That will be the final regular-season road game of the season for SRU, which closes out its schedule with back-to-back home games vs. Gannon and Clarion … Saturday's win was SRU's fifth straight over Edinboro … Reynolds, an assistant on veteran Edinboro coach Greg Walcavich's staff in the 1995-96 season, improved his record to 6-2 in head-to-head meetings with his mentor and 72-38 as The Rock's head coach. He ranks fourth on SRU's all-time wins chart.
