SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior forward
Devin Taylor scored 19 points and grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds Friday night to lead Slippery Rock University to a frenetic, 64-58 win over visiting Cheyney University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men's basketball interdivisional action in Morrow Field House.
Senior guard
Torrance Timothy added 11 points and five rebounds for The Rock (7-4 overall, 4-3 PSAC), while junior guard
Aubin Reeves contributed nine points and junior forward
Tabari Perry chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.
Jason Sabb scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed six rebounds for Cheyney (2-8 overall, 1-6 PSAC).
Behind Taylor's lead, The Rock was dominant in rebounding, as evidenced by a 56-31 advantage on the glass. That proved crucial as The Rock was forced to overcome a cold shooting effort.
SRU hit 38% (20-53) of its shot from the field, but was an icy 1-of-17 (6%) from 3-point range and relatively as frigid from the foul line, where the Green and White made only 23 of 43 (54%).
Cheyney had similar shooting woes from the field as the Wolves made only 30% (17-56) of their action shots and 14% (3-22) of their long-range attempts.
The guests stayed in the game primarily because of the teams' free throw shooting efforts. While The Rock struggled at the line, Cheyney buried 21 of 26 (81%) of its charity tosses.
Cheyney took an early 6-0 advantage and remained in front until the 12:15 mark of the opening half, when The Rock took its first lead of the game, 10-9, as part of a 9-0 run that gave the hosts a 14-9 lead at the midway mark of the 20-minute stanza.
The guests responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take a 17-14 lead and set the stage for the remainder of the game.
The lead changed hands four time in the final five minutes of the first half before Cheyney took a 26-24 edge into the intermission.
The Rock tied the score at 26 and 28 but did not regain the lead until the 14:15 mark of the second half, when a Timothy tip-in capped a 5-0 run and gave SRU a 39-38 advantage.
Cheyney answered that mini run by The Rock with a 7-0 spurt to take a 45-39 lead with 12:30 left to play, but two minutes later the hosts were back on top, 46-45.
The Rock trailed on only two occasions in the final 10-plus minutes, thanks in a large part to, ironically, good free throw shooting. The Rock made nine of their last 13 attempts from the stripe to hold the Wolves at bay.
SRU will have a short time to enjoy its win as Shippensburg, fresh off a 68-61 win Friday at Mercyhurst College, invades Morrow for a 7:30 p.m. game Saturday.
Notes:
Friday's double-double was Taylor's team-best fifth of the season ... Timothy, after scoring only 30 points in the first nine games this winter, has scored 35 points in the last two outings. He had a career-high 24 points Dec. 30 in The Rock's win over Ohio University Eastern ... Friday's win was the 64th recorded by The Rock in
Kevin Reynolds' four seasons as head coach and moved him into sole possession of fifth place on the SRU career wins chart. Reynolds can move into a tie with Dave Rooney (1979-85) for fourth place on that list with a win over Shippensburg.
