SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University successfully christened Mihalik-Thompson Stadium with a football victory Saturday night as The Rock rolled to a 54-0 win over visiting Cheyney University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference “crossover” action.
The stadium formerly known as N. Kerr Thompson Stadium was renamed during a halftime ceremony in honor of current head coach
George Mihalik and his 40 years of dedication to the University.
Saturday's game marked the second time in as many games The Rock (2-0) scored 50 or more points. SRU opened the 2011 season with a 51-14 win at Seton Hill the previous Saturday.
The Rock's dominance over their guests was as lopsided as the final score indicated. The Rock outgained Cheyney (1-1) by a 488-104 margin in total offense behind a balanced attack, in which the Green and White rushed for 247 yards and collected 241 yards through the air. Cheyney was held to 73 rushing and 31 passing yards.
Junior running back
Akeem Satterfield led The Rock ground game with 119 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns, while sophomore RB
Jimmy Zubik added 91 yards on only three carries, including a 70-yard TD run. Senior quarterback
Cody Endres completed 13 of 23 pass attempts for 241 yards and one TD. Senior wide receiver
Devin Goda was the top receiver with three catches for 64 yards as Endres completed passes to seven different receivers.
Malcolm Hailstock had 30 yards on five carries to lead Cheyney's rushing attack, backup quarterback Malik Witten passed for 35 yards on a 2-for-9 passing effort that included an interception and starting signal caller Chris Anderson was 1-for-8 for minus-4 yards.
Following a scoreless opening quarter, Satterfield scored the first points of the game on a 13-yard run to cap a six-play, 33-yard drive with 13:34 left in the second quarter. Junior kicking specialist
Kurt Brackman's extra-point attempt sailed wide to the right of the upright.
Brackman's 36-yard field goal with 6:23 left in the second quarter capped a seven-play, 49-yard drive and pushed The Rock's lead to 9-0.
Satterfield scored his second touchdown on a one-yard run with 1:46 left in the first half to cap a five-play, 53-yard drive and make it a 16-0 game.
Junior wide receiver and holder Mike Bongivengo then scored the final points of the first half, and in Thompson Stadium history, when he ran around right end for a 10-yard touchdown on a fake field goal attempt. Brackman's extra-point kick sent The Rock into the intermission with a 23-0 lead and set the stage for the halftime festivities honoring Mihalik, who is in his 24th season as The Rock's head coach.
The Rock outgained Cheyney by a 231-15 margin in the opening two periods. Endres was 9-of-15 passing for 134 yards in the first half with redshirt sophomore
John Schademan grabbing three passes for 42 yards and senior wideout
Devin Goda grabbing two passes for 44 yards.
On the flip side, The Rock defense held Cheyney to minus-4 passing yards on a 1-for-5 passing effort by Anderson.
Satterfield ran for 72 yards on 12 carries and scored two TDs in the first two periods to lead The Rock to a 97-19 advantage in rushing yards.
The junior from Erie (Cathedral Prep H.S.) scored his third TD of the game with 11:28 left in the third period when he ran 25 yards to the end zone to cap a six-play, 57-yard drive.
Brackman booted his second field goal of the game with 6:47 left in the third quarter to push the margin to 33-0. The kick capped a seven-play, eight-yard drive.
Senior wide receiver
Geron James sprinted 74 yards with a pass from Endres at the 14:06 mark of the fourth quarter to culminate a two-play, 80-drive that, after Brackman tacked on the PAT, pushed the margin to 40-0.
The TD pass was the first thrown this season by Endres, who transferred from Division I UConn.
The Rock defense, which scored two TDs on interceptions the previous week at Seton Hill, got its third score of the season with 11:47 left to play when senior free safety
Brandon Watters blocked a punt and redshirt freshman strong safety
Isaiah Coleman recovered it in the end zone for a TD. Brackman, who kicked six points at Seton Hill, booted his fifth PAT of the game following Coleman's TD to extend the hosts' lead to 47-0.
Zubik, a transfer from Division III power Mount Union, rambled 70 yards for his first Rock touchdown to push SRU's advantage to 54-0 with 6:15 remaining. The TD run came on the third play of a 78-yard drive.
That TD came on the series following Cheyney's first serious scoring threat. The Wolves moved 35 yards in eight plays before they were forced to settle for a 39-yard field goal attempt, which fell short of the crossbar.
Cheyney also threatened to score on its next possession but came up short on a fourth-and-five play with 1:54 left to play.
The Rock, which opened the season with two wins for the third straight season, will look to continue its winning ways next Saturday when it travels to West Chester for the second of three PSAC “crossover” games this fall.
