SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Slippery Rock University baseball team scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday afternoon to record an 11-5 win over visiting Mercyhurst in the first game of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park.
The second game was halted at 4 p.m. by rain showers and ultimately suspended until 11 a.m. Sunday at Critchfield Park.
Prior to that, The Rock (20-18 overall, 12-9 PSAC-West) and Mercyhurst (19-18, 10-7) will attempt to play their regularly-scheduled doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday in Erie.
If Saturday's games can not be played in Erie, the teams will then attempt to play three games Sunday at Critchfield Park, according to SRU Director of Athletics
Paul Lueken.
Friday's win moved The Rock into sole possession of fourth place in the PSAC-West standings, one-half game ahead of Gannon, which is idle from division play this weekend, and two games behind Mercyhurst.

California (24-12, 15-3) remained atop the PSAC-West standings after splitting a Friday doubleheader vs. second-place Indiana (21-20, 13-5).
The top four teams in the division at the end of division play next Saturday (April 24) will earn berths in the PSAC Championships, which will be held April 28-May 1 at Point Stadium in Johnstown.
Junior shortstop
Adam Jury swung the big stick for The Rock in Friday's game as he was 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning that gave SRU an early 1-0 lead and a grand slam home run as part of the decisive sixth-inning explosion.
Jury's roundtripper, which traveled well over the left-field fence, was his fourth of the season and broke a 5-5 deadlock.
Junior first baseman
Derek DiRuscia and senior designated hitter
Jacob Oswalt each had three hits to complement Jury's performance, while junior center fielder
Matt Howard and sophomore right fielder
Matt Kosik each added two hits in a 14-hit Rock attack. Senior second baseman
Billy Messer added a double to the winning effort.
Junior right-hander
George Hebert was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst and picked up his fifth win in six decisions with his fourth complete-game pitching effort of the season. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits, struck out three and walked five in seven innings.
Jury's first-inning double gave SRU an early lead, but it didn't last long as Mercyhurst scored two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
The Rock tied the score at 2-2 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, only to see the Lakers score twice in the top of the fifth and once in the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.
That lead also did not last long as SRU collected eight hits and took advantage of one Mercyhurst error in the bottom of the sixth to plate nine runs.
In addition to Jury's grand slam homer, key hits in the eruption were RBI singles by DiRuscia, Howard and sophomore left fielder
Carter Haponski.
