KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Junior
Shardea Croes and senior
Jessica Kortz each collected three hits and two RBIs Wednesday afternoon to propel the Slippery Rock University softball team to a 6-0 win over NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rival Fayetteville State.
The Rock was unable to ride the momentum of that win to victory in its second game of the day, though, as a Green and White comeback effort came up short and Minnesota-Duluth escaped with a 4-2 win.
The split gave SRU a 5-3 record heading into single games Thursday against Ferris State, Mich. (9 a.m.) and Wilmington, Delaware (11 a.m.).
The offensive efforts of Croes and Kortz in Wednesday's first game gave Rock starting pitcher
Shauna Walker all the support she would need as the junior allowed only one hit, struck out five and walked one in five innings of work.
Sophomore
Shaylee Ianno struck out six and scattered two hits in the final two frames.
Freshman third baseman
Jenna Geibel had the big stick in Wednesday's second game as she smacked a double and a solo home run in three at bats.
Geibel's double set the table for an RBI single by sophomore
Natalie Atkinson that got SRU on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Geibel then clobbered her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Junior
Lindsey Grace was The Rock's starting and losing pitcher in Game 2. She allowed three earned runs on five hits, struck out one and walked two in the first four innings. Ianno then struck out three and allowed one run on five hits in the final three frames.
