PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- Five Slippery Rock University players clobbered home runs Wednesday afternoon to lead The Rock to a 14-5, 10-2 doubleheader sweep of hosting Lake Erie College in non-conference action.
In the process, The Rock evened its season record at 21-21 as it prepares for Friday''s opening-round game in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.
Sheree Horvath hit the first of her two Game 1 home runs to key a four-run Rock rally in the top of the first inning that gave SRU a lead it would not relinquish. Her first-inning blast accounted for three RBIs.
Horvath, who allowed one run on four hits and walked four batters in three innings as The Rock's Game 1 starting and winning pitcher, added a solo HR later in the fourth inning to finish with four RBIs. She also had four hits in four at bats and scored four runs in the game.
Shardea Croes hit a grand slam home run in the third inning to highlight a five-run Rock outburst. She finished the game with two hits and five RBIs.
The Rock added three runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth to complete the rout.
Kirsten Brant hammered a two-run home run to join Horvath's solo blast as the highlights of SRU's fourth inning. Brant finished the game with two hits, three RBIs and four runs scored.
Erin Bukvic relieved Horvath in the fourth inning and allowed four earned runs on six hits and walked one in two innings before
Shauna Walker struck out one in the final frame.
In Game 2, The Rock plated three runs in the top of the first inning to again take an insurmountable lead.
Brant smacked a solo home run to lead off the third inning, Zeunges added a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning and
Jessica Guzewicz clobbered a two-run circuit clout in the fifth.
Zeunges was 3-for-3 and scored three runs in the game, while Brant and Horvath each scored two runs and Croes, Guzewicz had two RBis and scored one run, while
Kendra Kutz also scored one run.
Lisa Getgen pitched a five-inning complete game, allowed two unearned runs on four hits and struck out two in the game.
The Rock opens the PSAC tournament with an 11 a.m. game Friday vs. Shippensburg in Lock Haven. The winner of that game will face Lock Haven at 1 p.m. before the first-game loser meets the second-game loser in an elimination game at 3 p.m.
SRU will be making its first appearance in the PSAC playoffs in 25 years, dating back to the 1984 season when the team finished with an overall record of 12-9. The Rock was eliminated from the playoffs that season with losses to Bloomsburg and Shippensburg.
