EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Slippery Rock University softball team scored a run in the top of the 10th inning of Thursday's second game to salvage a split in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action at Edinboro University.
Edinboro (20-15 overall, 3-5 PSAC-W) blanked The Rock (16-18, 5-7) by a 3-0 score in Game 1 before SRU rebounded to take Game 2 by a 3-2 score.
The split, combined with Mercyhurst's sweep Thursday of a twinbill from Gannon, left SRU in a three-way tie for second place in the PSAC-West. The Rock is deadlocked with Gannon and Mercyhurst with four division games remaining on each team's schedule. Edinboro is in last place in the five-team division.
SRU steps outside of PSAC-West competition Friday for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Wheeling Jesuit before travelling to Mercyhurst for a 1 p.m. twinbill Saturday and hosting division-leading California (Pa.) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday.
Gannon and Mercyhurst each also have a doubleheader vs. California left to play, plus Gannon has a twinbill vs. Edinboro to complete.
Once all the division games are played, the top three teams in the division will advance to the conference tournament April 24-25.
The Rock has not competed in a PSAC playoff since 1994, a span of 25 seasons.
Edinboro scored three runs after two outs had been recorded in the bottom of the fourth inning in Thursday's first game and made those tallies stand up as the difference in the game.
SRU managed only three hits in the game as
Courtney Vincent,
Jordan Zeunges and
Sheree Horvath each had a single.
Rock starting pitcher
Shauna Walker was tagged with the loss. She allowed three runs on three hits, struck out two and walked three in four innings and saw her season record fall to 7-10.
Erin Bukvic struck out two and allowed two hits in the final two innings.
In Game 2, Edinboro scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning before The Rock evened the score with a run in the top of the sixth.on a one-out single by Vincent, a sacrifice bunt by
Kendra Kutz and an RBI single by
Jessica Kortz.
Edinboro came right back and scored another run in the bottom of the sixth, only to again see The Rock plate a run in the top of the seventh to re-tie the score at 2-2.
Kirsten Brant led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a walk to Zeunges and scored on an RBI single by
Jessica Ellebruch.
Freshman pitcher
Shaylee Ianno helped her own cause in the 10th as she lofted a sacifice fly to left field that allowed pinch runner
Whitney Warmus to scamper home from third base with the winning tally.
Ianno struck out 14 batters and scattered nine hits in the process of pitching a rare complete game. She allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, and did not walk a batter to improve her season record to 3-2.
