SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University's baseball team improved its season record to 28-12 Tuesday with an 8-3, 3-1 doubleheader sweep of visiting Ohio Valley University at Jack Critchfield Park.
The wins also improved the Green and White's record against West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-member schools to 6-0 and its mark against NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional opponents to 24-11.
SRU returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday, when it will open a four-game series against Lake Erie College of Ohio at Critchfield Park. The teams will also meet in a 1 p.m. twinbill Sunday at "The Jack."
SRU's scheduled doubleheader Wednesday at Shepherd College in West Virginia has been postponed due to the threat of inclement weather.
Headlining The Rock effort Tuesday vs. Ohio Valley were a complete-game pitching effort by sophomore southpaw
Brett Vescovi and a 2-for-3 game at the plate by freshman catcher
John Murray, both of which came in the second game of the doubleheader.
Vescovi scattered four hits, struck out six and allowed one earned run in his first start of the season and faced only 26 batters, five over the minimum for a seven-inning game.
Murray singled home what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning and then clobbered his first home run of the season, a solo shot, in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for SRU's final run of the day.
His circuit clout just inside the left field foul pole came one half inning after Ohio Valley had plated a run to trim The Rock lead to 2-1.
The Rock had only six hits in Game 2 after collecting 10 hits in Game 1.
Junior catcher/first baseman
Matt Adams had a pair of hits and one RBI in each game to join Murray as the offensive stars of the day.
Junior second baseman
Billy Messer and sophomore designated hitter
Mitchell Monas each had a pair of hits in Game 1.
Monas, Adams, senior center fielder
Rich Michalek, sophomore catcher
Derek Diruscia and junior left fielder
Jacob Oswalt each picked up one RBI in Game 1.
Redshirt freshman southpaw
John Thomas was the starting and winning pitcher in Game 1. He tossed five shutout innings and struck out three en route to his second win in as many decisions this spring.
Freshman right-hander
Nic McCowin allowed three earned runs on two hits and walked two without retiring a batter in the sixth inning before junior right-hander
Justin Thomas (no relation) struck out four, walked one and allowed two hits in the final two innings.
