FLORENCE, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University softball team closed its spring break trip Saturday with three wins at the Patriot Invitational hosted by Francis Marion University. The Rock defeated Newberry (8-0), Mansfield (7-0) and Barton (9-5).
The Rock used a seven-run fifth inning in the opening game of the day to run away from Newberry.
Lisa Getgen earned the win on the mound, throwing five innings and allowing no runs on four hits. The game was called after five innings due to the tournament's run-rule.
At the plate,
Jordan Zeunges led The Rock going 2-for-4 with a double.
Sheree Horvath recorded two RBI and
Kirsten Brant also had an RBI.
Slippery Rock scored eight runs on four hits and committed two errors. Newberry scored no runs on four hits with two errors.
In the second game of the day,
Shauna Walker allowed just three hits to earn the win in a shutout over Mansfield.
The Rock jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and added two more runs in the sixth inning.
Brant and
Jessica Kortz both hit homeruns in the game. Kortz also had a double and led the team with three RBI. Brant finished with two RBI. Zeunges connected on a double and
Lauren Saulter was credited with an RBI to round out The Rock's effort at the plate.
Slippery Rock finished the game with seven runs on nine hits and committed no errors. Mansfield managed three hits and committed no errors.
In the nightcap, the offense of
Jessica Guzewicz led The Rock to a win over Barton.
Guzewicz finished with three hits in four at bats, including two homeruns, and brought in three runs.
Stephanie Collenette added two RBI and
Leah Brickner added one.
Shaylee Ianno was credited with the win on the mound after throwing three innings, allowing one run on three hits.
The Rock jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Barton scored one in the third, but Slippery Rock responded with two runs in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead. Barton plated one run in the sixth inning and three in the seventh.
SRU finished the game with nine runs on 10 hits and committed one error. Barton scored five runs on 10 hits and also committed one error.
Saturday's games marked the end of the spring break trip for The Rock, which finished the trip with a 7-4 record to start the season.
Slippery Rock will travel to Bowie State (Md.) Saturday, March 14, for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
