Rock ends spring trip with 8-2 win over Mansfield

Saturday's win was the third in as many game against the Mounties and improved The Rock's record to 10-4, 8-3 during its spring-break trip to Florida

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Senior center fielder Rich Michalek was 2-for-4 and collected three RBIs Saturday to lead the Slippery Rock University baseball team to an 8-2 victory over Mansfield in the final game of The Rock's spring-break trip to the Sunshine State.

The win, SRU's third in as many meetings with its regional rival, improved The Rock's season record to 10-4 and gave it an 8-3 mark on the trip.

The Rock is currently 6-3 against NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rivals.

Sophomore catcher-first baseman Derek Diruscia was 2-for-4 with an RBI and junior second baseman Billy Messer was also 2-for-4 as part of an 11-hit Rock offensive attack.

Junior catcher-first baseman Matt Adams and senior third baseman Billy Herman each added an RBI double to the winning attack.

Junior right-hander Vince Lloyd was The Rock's starting and winning pitcher. He allowed two runs on two hits, struck out eight and walked five in five and one-third innings.

Freshman righty John Thomas also allowed two hits, struck out one and walked one in one and two-thirds innings of relief work before sophomore righty Justin Thomas (no relation) closed out the game with three strikeouts, one walk and two hits allowed in the final two frames.

The Rock is idle until Friday, when it will open the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division schedule with a 1 p.m. doubleheader vs. California (Pa.) at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pa.

The Rock and Vulcans will then close out their four-game season series with a 1 p.m. twinbill next Saturday at Jack Critchfield Park.

The following day, The Rock will host Bluefield State (W. Va.) in a noon non-conference doubleheader at "The Jack."

Boxscores from the final six games of The Rock's spring trip will be posted Monday, along with cumulative statistics.
