Rock drops two games at Patriot Invitational

SRU falls to Coker, 6-0, and Francis Marion, 4-2, to open play at the Patriot Invitational in Florence, S.C.

FLORENCE, S.C.
– The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped a pair of games Friday at the Patriot Invitational, falling 6-0 to Coker in the opener and 4-2 against Francis Marion in the nightcap.

The Rock changed venues on its spring break trip, moving from Savannah, Ga. to the Patriot Invitational hosted by Francis Marion in Florence.

In the opening game, Coker plated one run in the first inning and put the game out of reach with four runs in the fourth inning en route to a 6-0 win.

Coker finished the game with six runs on five hits and committed no errors. Slippery Rock scored no runs on three hits and committed four errors in the game.

Shauna Walker was credited with the loss after throwing seven innings, allowing six runs and five hits.

Jordan Zeunges led the way at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a triple, The Rock's lone extra base hit.

In the nightcap against the host institution, Slippery Rock scored two runs in its final two at bats but could not overcome a four run deficit.

Francis Marion plated three runs in the second inning and added a fourth in the third inning.

Shaylee Ianno was credited with the loss on the mound, allowing six hits and four runs in four innings of work. Lisa Getgen threw the final two innings and did not allow a hit.

Jessica Kortz (pictured above) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Sheree Horvath was 1-for-3 with a homerun.

Francis Marion scored four runs on six hits and committed one error. The Rock plated two runs on six hits and also committed one error.

With the losses, Slippery Rock evens out at 4-4 to start the season.

The Rock will conclude its spring break trip Saturday with three games at the Patriot Invitational. Games are scheduled against Newberry, Mansfield and Barton at 1 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
