Rock falls twice against Shippensburg

The defending regional champions snapped SRU's three-game win streak with 10-2 and 5-0 wins Thursday in Fort Pierce, Fla.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Defending regional champion Shippensburg University, behind strong pitching performances by their No. 1 and No. 2 starters, handed the Slippery Rock University baseball team 10-2 and 5-0 setbacks Thursday.

The losses snapped a modest three-game win streak for The Rock, who will take an 8-4 record into Friday's nine-inning single game vs. Mansfield.

Those same two teams will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in the final game of SRU's 11-game spring-break trip to the Sunshine State.

The Rock outhit Shippensburg (5-11) by an 11-9 margin in Game 1 of Thursday's twinbill, but could not overcome six Red Raiders runs in the first three innings off SRU starting and losing pitcher Mike Ritson.

Ritson, a sophomore right-hander, allowed seven runs on four hits, struck out one, walked two and hit one batter in the first three frames. Freshman righty Nic McCowin yielded two runs on one hit, struck out one, walked two and hit two batters in the next two innings before senior southpaw Sean Holliday allowed two runs on five hits and struck out one in the final two innings.

Offensively, four Rock players had a pair of hits each. Senior right fielder Scott Bender was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while junior second baseman Billy Messer, junior left fielder Jacob Oswalt and senior shortstop Kyle Smith were also 2-for-3. Senior center fielder Rich Michalek collected the other Rock RBI. Oswalt had the only extra-base hit, a double.

Senior southpaw Mark Tanner was the Game 2 starting and losing pitcher for SRU. He allowed five runs on nine hits, struck out one and walked one in four and two-thirds innings. Sophomore right-hander Justin Thomas struck out three of the four batters he faced in the final one and one-third innings.

Bender was 2-for-4 with a double and and sophomore catcher-first baseman Derek Diruscia was 2-for-3 to headline an eight-hit Rock attack in the second game.
