Shaylee Ianno combined to allow just two hits in two games Wednesday as the Slippery Rock softball team shutout Chestnut Hill, 9-0, and Edward Waters, 6-0, at the Savannah College of Art and Design's Smash Hit Tournament.
Walker (pictured above) was credited with the win against Chestnut Hill after throwing three innings, allowing no hits and striking out five. Bukvic closed the final two innings, allowing one hit, and the game was called after five innings due to the tournament's run rule.
Kirsten Brant and
Courtney Vincent each continued their hot starts to the season, leading the The Rock effort at the plate.
Brant finished the game 2-of-3 with a team-high three RBIs, while Vincent went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and one RBI.
Jessica Kortz was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run scored and
Kendra Kutz belted her first homerun of the season, finishing the game with two runs scored and one RBI.
Jessica Ellebruch and
Sheree Horvath also had RBIs in the game.
The Rock scored two runs in the first and third innings, added four more in the fourth inning and was never challenged in the game.
Slippery Rock finished the game with nine runs on eight hits with one error, while Chestnut Hill scored no runs on one hit and committed six errors.
Getgen was credited with the win in the nightcap against Edward Waters, going four innings and allowing no hits while striking out five. Ianno closed the final three innings, allowing one hit while striking out six of the 10 batters she faced.
It was Vincent and Brant leading the way again in the second game. Vincent finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Brant was 3-for-4 with one run scored.
Shardea Croes was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI and Kortz added the only other RBI for The Rock.
Slippery Rock scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and broke the game open with a four run second inning. Edward Waters never challenged in the game.
The Rock finished the game with six runs on 11 hits with one error while Edward Waters scored no runs on one hit and committed four errors.
Wednesday's wins improve The Rock to 4-2 on a spring break trip that will change venues before the next round of games. The team will travel Thursday and resume competition Friday and Saturday in Florence, S.C., with games against Coker and Francis Marion scheduled for Friday and a tripleheader against Newberry, Mansfield and Barton set for Saturday.
