Rock sweeps #11 West Chester

Jacob Oswalt had five hits, including three doubles, in Wednesday's doubleheader to lead The Rock (8-2) to 4-2 and 6-5 wins

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Junior left fielder Jacob Oswalt had five hits, including three doubles, Wednesday to lead the Slippery Rock University baseball team to a 4-2, 6-5 doubleheader sweep of No. 11 West Chester at the Bob Gladwin Baseball Complex.

The wins improved The Rock's record to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in spring-break games as the Green and White prepare to take on defending regional champion Shippensburg in a twinbill Thursday.

Oswalt (pictured above) was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI in Game 1 Wednesday and was 3-for-3 with two doubles in the nightcap.

He was one of three Rock players to collect three hits in the second game. Senior center fielder Rich Michalek was 3-for-4 with two doubles and picked up two RBIs, while senior right fielder Scott Bender was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Junior second baseman Billy Messer and freshman designated hitter Matt Kosik also had a double in Game as The Rock collected seven doubles in the course of a 15-hit attack.

Junior catcher-first baseman Matt Adams and sophomore designated hitter Adam Jury were both 2-for-3 in Game 1. Bender, Jury, Oswalt and sophomore first baseman-catcher Derek Diruscia each had an RBI in the game. Jury and Oswalt had a double each to account for SRU's Game 1 extra-base hit attack. The Rock had a total of eight hits in the game.

Veteran head coach Jeff Messer got seven-inning, complete-game pitching performances from sophomore right-handers Scott Dunn and George Hebert to save some pitching for the final four games of the spring trip.

Dunn allowed two runs on four hits, struck out two and walked two in Game 1 before Hebert yielded five runs on 11 hits, struck out four and walked one in Game 2.

The Rock, after taking on Shippensburg, will close out their spring-break schedule with nine-inning single games Friday and Saturday vs. Mansfield.
