SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Slippery Rock University softball team opened its season with two convincing wins on Monday at the Savannah College of Art and Design's Smash Hit Tournament. The Rock women took down Franklin College in the opener and Chestnut Hill in the nightcap.
The Rock opened the spring break trip and the season with a 6-1 win over Franklin.
In the opener,
Shauna Walker went the distance to pick up the win on the mound, allowing just three hits and no earned runs in seven innings of work.
At the plate,
Jessica Kortz,
Jordan Zeunges and
Courtney Vincent all recorded multi-hit games.
Kortz led the way, going 2-for-2 with a homerun and a double while scoring two runs and recording one stolen base.
Zeunges finished the game 2-for-3 with one run scored and led the team with three stolen bases.
Vincent was 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Kortz,
Rachel Henderson and
Jessica Ellebruch were each credited with one RBI.
The Rock scored first, plating two runs in the top of the third inning. Vincent reached third-base with a triple and scored on a passed ball and Kortz homered to plate the second run of the inning.
Franklin got one run back in the bottom of the third, an unearned run after a Rock fielding error.
The Rock put the game out of reach with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and Franklin could only manage one hit in its final four at bats.
Slippery Rock finished the game with 11 hits to Franklin's three, while committing three errors.
After two hours of rest, The Rock women picked up their second win of the day with a 3-0 shutout over Chestnut Hill.
Lisa Getgen earned the win and the shutout on the mound, going the distance and allowing just two hits while striking out 11 batters in seven innings of work.
At the plate, Vincent carried momentum from the opener into the second game, leading the team with three hits in four at bats. She also stole four bases, plated one run and recorded an RBI.
Shardea Croes was the only other Rock player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Kirsten Brant picked up one hit and had The Rock's other two RBIs in the contest.
Slippery Rock scored all three of its runs in the first two innings, plating two in the top of the first and one more in the second.
Vincent reached first base with a bunting single and then stole second base in the first. Ellebruch reached on a walk and the duo combined for a double steal to put runners on second and third with two outs. Brant singled to score both runners before the inning ended.
In the second inning, Croes reached on a single and stole two bases to reach third base. Vincent belted a single to plate Croes for the third run of the game.
Chestnut Hill managed one hit in the bottom of the second inning and one more in the third inning, but could not score. Its best chance came in the fourth inning, when two errors and a walk led to a bases loaded situation, but Getgen pitched out of the jam with a strikeout to end the inning.
The Rock posted eight hits in the second game to Chestnut Hill's two and recorded three errors in the game.
