SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University's softball team opened its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division schedule with a doubleheader sweep Wednesday of visiting Edinboro, but the wins did not come easily.
The Rock (12-5 overall) had to hold off a Fighting Scots' rally in the final frame to record a 5-4 victory in Game 1, then needed an extra inning to chalk up a 7-6 triumph in Game 2.
SRU held a 5-1 lead after three innings in the opening game before Edinboro (12-8) made things interesting with three runs in the top of the seventh innin. The Fighting Scots had the potential tying run on third base and the potential winning run on second base when the final out was recorded.
The Rock collected seven hits in the game, led by a triple by sophomore left fielder Jordan Zeunges (pictured above) to lead off the bottom of the first inning and a pair of doubles by junior catcher Jessica Kortz.
Junior center fielder Courtney Vincent and freshman shortstop Kirstin Brant each picked up an RBI.
Senior right-hander Lisa Getgen recorded a complete-game pitching effort for The Rock. She scattered 15 hits, allowed four runs (three earned), struck out three and walked one.
The second game was a nail biter as The Rock fought back from and early 3-0 score to win by a score of 7-6 in extra innings.
In Game 2, Edinboro jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Getgen, who was lifted after facing only four batters.
Sophomore right-hander Shauna Walker relieved Getgen and shut down the Fighting Scots for the next four innings while her teammates clawed their way back.
A single run in the bottom of the third and five runs in the fifth erased Edinboro's early lead and put The Rock on top by a 6-3 count.
Kortz singled home The Rock's third-inning tally. Junior designated hitter Kendra Kutz had the big hit in the fifth inning with a three-run double after Zeunges led off the inning with a home run and sophomore first baseman Sheree Horvath slapped an RBI single.
Edinboro narrowed the gap to 6-4 with a run in the top of the sixth and then tied the score at 6-6 with two runs in the seventh.
The Rock manufactured the winning run from a pair of walks, a bunt single by junior center fielder Courtney Vincent and a wild pitch.
Vincent, who scored the winning run on the wild pitch, and Kortz were both 4-for-5 in the game to lead a 14-hit Rock attack. One of Kortz's hits was a double, her third of the day. Kutz had a pair of hits in the game, the big one her three-run double.
Freshman right-hander Shaylee Ianno, the third and final pitcher used by Rock head coach Vashion Johnson, picked up the win after pitching the final inning.
The Rock's next action will be this weekend when it will play five games in three days as part of a 24-team event in Salem, Va.
SRU will play five West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-member schools during the event, starting with an 11 a.m. date Friday with West Liberty State College.
