FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Slippery Rock University scored 47 runs on 42 hits, including seven home runs, Sunday en route to a 22-4, 25-2 sweep of Philadelphia-based University of the Sciences in non-conference baseball action at the Bob Gladwin Baseball Complex.

Headlining the list of home run hitters was senior center fielder Rich Michalek (pictured above), who smacked a grand slam in Game 1, and junior first baseman-catcher Matt Adams, who clobbered two towering blasts in Game 2.

Senior right fielder Scott Bender smashed a three-run HR and junior left fielder Jacob Oswalt hit a two-run HR to round out the Game 1 circuit clouts.

Sophomore catcher-first baseman Derek Diruscia hit a two-run HR and sophomore designated hitter Adam Jury legged out an inside-the-park HR in Game 2.

The Rock (5-1) had 24 hits in Game 1 and added 18 in the nightcap while Sciences had five hits in each game. SRU played errorless defense for the fourth straight game; Sciences committed one error in Game 1 and four in Game 2.

Oswalt led SRU's Game 1 attack with a 4-for-4 game that included his home run. Diruscia (2 RBIs), Michalek, junior second baseman Billy Messer each added three hits, while Adams had two doubles.

Sophomore outfielder Mitchell Monas had a triple and Messer, freshman outfielder Carter Haponski and senior third baseman Billy Herman each had a double in Game 1.

Freshman right-hander Nic McCowin picked up the Game 1 win in relief of senior starter Don Pugliese, who left the game with an arm injury after facing only two batters (walk and hit batsman). McCowin allowed two earned runs on five hits, struck out four and hit one batter in five innings.

Freshman right-hander John Thomas then slammed the door as he struck out five of the six batters he faced in the final two innings of Game 1.

Sophomore right-hander Mike Ritson, a transfer from Winthrop University, picked up the Game 2 win in his first appearance for The Rock. He struck out seven, walked one and allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings.

Senior southpaw Mark Tanner, hampered the past two seasons by injuries, looked sharp in the final three frames as he also struck out seven, including all three batters to face him in the seventh inning, and allowed only one run on one hit.

Adams paced The Rock's Game 2 attack with a 3-for-3 game that featured his two HRs and resulted in five RBIs for the left-hand-hitting two-time All-America performer.

Jury also had three hits in the game, including his in-the-park HR and a double.

The Rock continues its spring-break schedule Monday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rival East Stroudsburg.

SRU is idle Tuesday and takes on regional power West Chester in a 4 p.m. twinbill Wednesday.

Monday's games will start a string of 30 straight games The Rock has scheduled against Atlantic Regional foes. Eight of those games will be played as part of the spring-break schedule, which runs through March 7.
