BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Sophomores Scott Dunn and George Hebert combined to strike out 10 batters Saturday and lead the Slippery Rock University baseball team to a 3-1 win over in-state rival Mansfield in the first game of SRU's annual spring-break trip to the Sunshine State.
Dunn (1-0) scattered four hits and struck out six in five scoreless innings to open the game before Hebert allowed one earned run on five hits, struck out four and hit one batter in the final four frames.
Dunn was helped along by a 5-4-3 double play in the fifth inning.
Offensively, junior catcher-first baseman Matt Adams, senior right fielder Scott Bender and junior second baseman Billy Messer were each 2-for-4 to lead an eight-hit Rock attack.
Messer (pictured above), sophomore catcher-first baseman Derek Diruscia and sophomore designated hitter Adam Jury each picked up one RBI for the Green and White.
Messer doubled and scored on a two-bagger by Diruscia in the top of the second inning to account for SRU's first run of the game.
Bender's leadoff triple and a fielder's choice groundball by Jury made it 2-0 in the fourth.
A leadoff walk to senior third baseman Billy Herman, an Adams single, a bunt single by Bender and Messer's RBI single produced the third Rock run in the sixth inning.
The Rock (3-1) returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday, when it will take on Philadelphia-based University of the Sciences at the Bob Gladwin Baseball Complex in Fort Pierce, Fla.
Sunday, The Rock plays a 3 p.m. twinbill vs. East Stroudsburg in Fort Pierce.
Satuday's game was the first of five scheduled this spring between SRU and Mansfield (2-6). The teams meet in single games March 6 and 7 in Fort Pierce to conclude the teams' spring-break schedules, then duel April 5 in a twinbill in Mounties territory.
