SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Rock recorded an odd split in Wednesday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference interdivisional doubleheader vs. Mansfield at Jack Critchfield Park.
SRU mauled the Mounties by a 16-5 score in Game 1, but then lost a 10-9 decision in eight innings in Game 2.
The Rock (15-13) scored three unearned runs on two Mansfield errors in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the second game into overtime but then gave up a run in the top of the eighth.
SRU returns to action Friday, when it will visit Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. PSAC-Western Division twinbill. The Rock and Bald Eagles are then scheduled to conclude their four-game season series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Critchfield Park.
Game 1
Mansfield's Justin Garcia smacked a three-run home run with one otu in the top of the first inning to give the guests an early 3-0 lead before The Rock erupted for nine runs on nine hits in the bottom of the first to take firm command of the proceedings.
Scott Bender, one of two Rock players to record three hits in the game, had two of the safeties in the first inning with a single and an RBI double.
Rich Michalek smacked a two-run double as part of the decisive rally, while
Scott Hugney,
Jacob Oswalt,
Jim Eimiller and
Matt Messer each had an RBI single and
Matt Adams collected an RBI with a groundout.
A sacrifice fly by Eimiller in the second inning extended The Rock lead to 10-3 before Mansfield scored twice in the top of the third to trim the margin to 10-5.
The Rock came right back with three runs in the bottom of the third and added two tallies in the fifth and one in the sixth to complete the game's scoring.
#M.J. Parsons# doubled home one run and Hugney had an RBI single to key the third-inning rally.
Anthony Heaps lined a double down the left field line and Oswalt picked up an RBI on a groundout in the fifth before
Billy Herman's double to right center plated the final run in the sixth.
Rock starting pitcher
Sean Holliday benefitted from an 18-hit offensive attack to improve his record to 3-2. He allowed five earned runs on 11 hits and struck out two in six innings before
Craig Misiewicz struck out two in the final frame to close out the game.
Bender and Hugney had three hits each to lead The Rock attack while Herman, Michalek and Oswalt each had two hits. Eimiller, Hugney, Michalek and Oswalt each collected two RBIs in the game.
Game 2
The Rock had 12 hits in Game 2, but benefitted greatly from four Mansfield errors. Four of SRU's nine runs were of the unearned variety, highlighted by three in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Mansfield took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning before The Rock came right back to score four times in the bottom of the first and added a fifth run in the second.
Bender tripled to left center and Parsons doubled to virtually the same spot to key The Rock's first-inning rally.
Billy Messer led off the second with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a bunt single by Michalek and an ensuing throwing error by Mansfield.
The guests trimmed the margin to two, 5-3, with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning and took a 7-5 lead with a four-spot in the fourth.
SRU got one run back in its half of the fourth on an RBI single by Adams before Mansfield added two runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 9-6.
Down to its final at-bat, The Rock rallied to score three times in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 9-9.
Derek Diruscia, Eimiller and
Billy Messer each had a single in the rally, Diruscia and Eimiller both scored when a potential game-ending line drive by Bender was mishandled before Messer trotted home when a groundball by Herman was misplayed.
Mansfield came right back to get three hits off Misiewicz in the top of the eighth to plate the winning run.
The Rock was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth.
Misiewicz, the sixth pitcher used in the game by Rock head coach
Jeff Messer, was tagged with the loss. He allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out one in his only inning of work.
Rock starting pitcher #Vince Lloyd# yielded three runs (two earned) on two hits, struck out one and walked five in the first three innings.
Brett Vescovi then allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and struck out one in one-third inning of work before
Colin McCoy allowed one earned run on one hit in one inning.
Don Pugliese pitched one inning and did not allow a hit or a run, nor did he record a strikeout or issue a base on balls in one inning of work before giving way to Misiewicz.
Billy Messer and Michalek each had three hits for SRU. Adams, Bender,
Matt Messer and Parsons each picked up an RBI.
