INDIANA, Pa. -- The Rock dropped both ends of Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader at Indiana U. of Pa. by a single run as the Crimson Hawks recorded 3-2 and 5-4 wins.
The losses dropped SRU's overall record to 14-8 and its PSAC-West mark to 0-6 heading into Sunday's 1 p.m. PSAC-West doubleheader at Edinboro.
The Rock was held to only three hits in Game 1 of Saturday's twinbill.
A leadoff home run by
Sheree Horvath in the top of the third inning gave SRU a 1-0 lead before a leadoff walk to
Stacey Rhoades followed by two sacrifice bunts and a wild pitch in the fourth pushed the Green and White's lead to 2-0.
IUP erased that deficit with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth and retired SRU in order via strikeouts in the top of the seventh to record a come-from-behind win.
Rhoades was tagged with the Game 1 pitching loss, her first in six decisions this spring, after she allowed three earned runs on eight hits, struck out one and walked two in a six-inning complete-game effort.
Horvath's home run, a two-out single by
Jordan Zeunges in the fifth inning and a two-out double by
Jessica Ellebruch in the sixth inning accounted for the only Rock hits in Game 1.
The Rock scored four runs on three hits in the top of the second inning of Game 2 but was again unable to hold off a late IUP rally.
The hosts scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to trim the margin in half, 4-2, then won the game with three runs on four hits in their final at-bat in the bottom of the sixth.
Courtney Vincent and Rhoades each slapped a two-run single after two outs had been recorded in the top of the second inning to account for The Rock runs.
Lisa Getgen was the Game 2 starting and losing pitcher for SRU. She saw her record drop to 5-3 after she yielded five runs (four earned) on 12 hits and struck out one batter in six innings.
After visiting Edinboro for Sunday's twinbill, The Rock is idle until Thursday, when it will open a six-games-in-three-days homestand with a non-conference doubleheader vs. Lake Erie College of Ohio (2:30 p.m. first pitch).
The Rock then hosts division rivals California U. of Pa. (2:30 p.m.) and Clarion (1 p.m.) on successive days.
