CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Lisa Getgen pitched a two-hit, complete-game shutout in Game 1 of Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader at California U. of Pa. to propel The Rock to a school-record-setting 27th win of the season.
Getgen (pictured above), who struck out one and walked one in six innings, also got 10 hits of offensive support as The Rock handed the PSAC playoff-bound Vulcans an 8-0, run-rule-ended setback.
California turned the tables in Game 2 and rode a combined three-hit shutout by two hurlers to a 7-0 win.
The split gave SRU a final overall record of 27-15, one win better than last year's total of 26, and a PSAC-West mark of 7-13.
California is now 26-14 overall, 12-8 in PSAC-West action. The Vulcans will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 PSAC-West seed in next week's conference playoffs.
Meghan McHenry's two-out single in the top of the first inning allowed
Jordan Zeunges, who had been hit by a pitch and stolen second base, to score the only run Getgen would ultimately need to record her 12th win of the season, one shy of the school record held by Brittany Hahn (2005).
The score remained stuck at 1-0 until the top of the fifth, when a leadoff single by Getgen opened a four-run Rock rally. McHenry had a two-run single in the inning.
Courtney Vincent plated another run with an infield single and
Jessica Ellebruch picked up an RBI when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Rock then brought an early end to Game 1 (in accordance with the "run rule") by scoring three times in the top of the sixth. A solo home run by
Sheree Horvath, doubles by
Shardea Croes and Zeunges (RBI) and a run-scoring single by
Stacey Rhoades were the highlights of the outburst.
McHenry, Vincent and Zeunges each had two hits to lead The Rock's 10-hit attack in Game 1.
In stark contrast to Game 1, the only Rock hits in Game 2 were a two-out single by Horvath in the second inning and back-to-back infield singles by Vincent and Zeunges in the third.
The Rock had only one baserunner in the final four innings; Rhoades earned a leadoff walk in the sixth.
