ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Rock offense generated only five hits in 14 innings Wednesday afternoon as the Green and White were handed 6-1, 5-0 defeats by perennial NCAA Division II national power Ashland University in a non-conference doubleheader at Donges Field.
Sophomore All-America catcher/DH Matt Adams collected the only Rock RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 that tied the score at 1-1.
SRU (12-9) was held to only one hit in Game 2, a two-out infield single by pinch hitter Anthony Heaps in the top of the seventh and final inning.
Ashland Game 1 starting and winning pitcher Todd Schlenkerman allowed one run on four hits, struck out eight, walked four and hit one batter in six innings before reliever Matt Schultz (two strikeouts) retired The Rock in order in the seventh.
The Rock had the leadoff hitter on base in four of the first six innings but could push across only one run.
Rich Michalek had two of The Rock's four hits in Game 1, while Scott Bender and Scott Hugney each added one hit. All four hits were singles.
Rock Game 1 starting and losing pitcher Sean Holliday (2-2) allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings. Jim Hughes struck out one batter in one inning to finish up.
In Game 2, Rock starting and losing pitcher Vince Lloyd (1-1) allowed five runs on five hits in three and one-third innings.
Colin McCoy, in his first action of the season, allowed two hits and struck out two in one and two-thirds innings before Hughes pitched the final inning.
SRU will look to end a four-game losing skid Friday when it meets four-time defending Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division champion California U. of Pa. in a 1 p.m. twinbill at Consul Energy Park in Washington, Pa.
The Rock and Vulcans then conclude their four-game season series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock.
Ashland, which is ranked 30th in this week's Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll, has now won 11 of its last 13 games.
