ERIE, Pa. -- The Rock reached the 20-win milestone for an unprecedented fourth straight season Tuesday when it recorded a 6-1, 4-1 doubleheader sweep of hosting non-conference rival Mercyhurst.
The sweep gave this year's Green and White squad a 20-12 overall record heading into Friday's 2:30 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division twinbill vs. second-ranked Lock Haven.
Mercyhurst, which will join the PSAC-West at the start of the 2008-09 academic year, saw its season record drop to 17-21.
Stacey Rhoades had three hits, including a double, and scattered seven hits in a complete-game pitching effort to lead The Rock to victory in Game 1. She struck out two, walked two and allowed one earned run en route to her seventh win in nine decisions this spring.
Meghan McHenry, who was named Monday as the PsAC-West "Player of the Week," added a pair of hits, including a double, and collected two RBIs.
The Rock had seven hits in each game.
SRU scored two runs in the top of the second inning and never trailed en route to the Game 1 win. A bases-loaded walk to
Lauren Saulter and an RBI single by
Nikki Collins plated the runs.
The Rock extended its lead to 3-0 with a run in the top of the third. Rhoades started the rally with a leadoff double and trotted home one out later on McHenry's two-bagger.
A Mercyhurst error on a one-out ground ball by
Samantha Pfister in the top of the sixth inning allowed The Rock's fourth run to score.
Mercyhurst got its only run in the bottom of the sixth before SRU padded its final margin with two tallies in the top of the seventh. A bases-loaded walk by McHenry and a groundout by
Lisa Getgen plated the runs.
In Game 2, The Rock broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the top of the fourth inning, added a run in the fifth and then answered a Mercyhurst tally in the bottom of the sixth with two runs in the top of the seventh.
Courtney Vincent singled home the first Rock run before a leadoff double by
Sheree Horvath and an RBI single by Rhoades accounted for the second run.
The final two Rock runs scored thanks to two Mercyhurst errors and a sacrifice fly by Horvath.
Jessica Kortz had a pair of doubles to join Horvath as the only Rock players with two hits in Game 2., while Horvath, Rhoades and Vincent each collected an RBI.
Getgen recorded a route-going pitching effort in Game 2 as she scattered six hits, allowed one unearned run, struck out four and walked one en route to her eighth win against five defeats this spring.
Notes: Friday's doubleheader vs. Lock Haven is the first of three home twinbills The Rock has scheduled in as many days. PSAC-West rival Edinboro comes to town for a 1 p.m. date Saturday before Wheeling Jesuit invades for a 1 p.m. non-conference date Sunday ... This year marks only the sixth time since softball became an SRU varsity sport in 1977 that a Rock softball team has won 20 or more games. The 1979 and 1980 teams coached by SRU Athletic Hall of Famer
Jan Kasnevich recorded 20-4 and 23-5 records, respectively. Current head coach
Vashion Johnson led the 2005, 2006 and 2007 teams to 24-19, 20-24 and 26-21 records.
