COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Rock successfully opened its 2008 season Thursday afternoon with a 6-0, 11-3 doubleheader sweep of hosting Benedict College.
Game 2 was halted after five innings in accordance with the "mercy rule."
Shardea Croes paced the Game 1 attack with a triple, two RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs scored.
Jessica Kortz also collected a pair of hits, including a double, while
Nikki Collins smacked a triple and
Lauren Saulter slapped a double.
Stacey Rhoades was the Game 1 starting and winning pitcher. She allowed two hits, struck out four and walked one in five innings before
Lisa Getgen yielded one hit and fanned one in the final two frames.
Alicia Dixon collected two hits and three RBIs to lead the Game 2 attack.
Kim Weindel also had a pair of hits, Rhoades smacked a triple and stole two bases and Collins had a double. Croes scored one run and stole one base and
Courtney Vincent swiped two bases.
Shauna Walker was the winning pitcher in Game 2. She allowed one run on four hits and struck out three in three innings of relief work.
Sheree Horvath allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one in the first two innings.
The Rock is idle Friday and will meet Cedarville (Ohio) University in a twinbill Saturday to open a string of 10 games in Cocoa Beach, Fla., as part of the annual spring trip to the Sunshine State.
