SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- One day after The Rock had swept a doubleheader in Shippensburg, the Red Raiders turned the tables and took two from SRU Sunday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action at Jack Critchfield Park.

Shippensburg blanked the Green and White 3-0 in Game 1 Sunday and prevailed by a 4-2 margin in a 13-inning marathon game in the nightcap.

Thus, the Red Raiders and Rock are tied for third place in the PSAC-West standings at the end of one weekend of divisional play.

California and Indiana are tied for first place with 3-1 division records, followed by SRU and Shippensburg each at 2-2 and Clarion and Lock Haven each at 1-3.

The Rock meets California next weekend in the second set of four games while Shippensburg takes on Clarion and Indiana butts heads with Lock Haven.

Prior to the series with California, though, The Rock (12-7) will travel to perennial NCAA Division II national power Ashland for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday.

Game 1

The Rock got seven hits off Shippensburg pitcher Tim Freshour (6-2) but could not dent the plate. Billy Herman had two of The Rock's hits. There were no extra-base hits in the game.

Justin Dickert was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, striking out two and walking two in a seven-inning complete-game effort.

Shippensburg got four of its hits and all three of its runs in the top of the third inning.

The Rock threatened to score in the bottom of the first inning when Scott Bender and Herman recorded back-to-back one-out singles. The rally ended, though, when Matt Adams struck out swinging and Herman got picked off for an inning-ending double play.

SRU also got back-to-back singles in the fifth, this time by Jim Eimiller and Jacob Oswalt, before a foul popup and a ground out nixed the threat.

All told, SRU stranded six runners on base in Game 1.

Game 2

The teams combined to strand 33 baserunners (Shippensburg 17, SRU 16) in the nightcap as each squad wasted numerous opportunities to win the game in regulation and then extra time.

Adams doubled to right center with two outs in the first inning to give SRU a quick 1-0 lead.

Shippensburg tied the score at 1-1 with a tally in the top of the fourth.

That's the way the score remained through completion of the scheduled seven innings of action and four extra stanzas.

The guests then took a 2-1 lead on the strength of three basehits in the top of the 12th, only to see SRU answer with a tally in the bottom of the 12th.

Rich Michalek, who had walked and eventually scored the first Rock run, got a base on balls to start the Rock 12th-inning rally and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bender before Herman slapped an RBI single up the middle.

Shippensburg came right back to score two runs in the 13th on three hits and a Rock error.

Eimiller earned a one-out walk and Bender singled through the left side with two outs to bring the potential winning run to the plate but the Red Raiders slammed the door with a game-ending forceout.

Adams was 4-for-5 and Herman and Dan Hudeck each added two hits to pace a 12-hit Rock attack. Adams and Hudeck had a double each to account for SRU's extra-base hits.

Shippensburg collected 13 hits off four Rock pitchers.

Brett Vescovi was tagged with the loss in his first decision of the season after he allowed two earned runs on three hits and struck out one in the final inning.

Rock starting pitcher Don Pugliese allowed one earned run on six hits and struck out three in six innings before Mike DeCola gave up one hit, struck out five and walked four in two and two-thirds innings and Justin Thomas yielded one earned run on three hits, struck out four and walked two in three and one-third frames.
