SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Junior third baseman
Billy Herman slapped an RBI single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the seventh inning of Tuesday's second game to complete a 9-5, 4-3 doubleheader sweep of visiting Gannon in non-conference action at Jack Critchfield Park.
The sweep extended The Rock's current win streak to five games and sends SRU into this weekend's crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division series vs. Shippensburg with a 10-5 overall record.
The Rock is scheduled to visit the defending conference champion Red Raiders for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday before the teams are slated to meet in a 1 p.m. twinbill Saturday at Critchfield Park.
Those two games, which will mark the start of the PSAC-Western Division schedule, open a string of 10 straight games The Rock is scheduled to play against perennial NCAA Division II postseason competitors.
The Green and White are scheduled to visit Ashland (Ohio) for a non-conference doubleheader April 2, then tangle with two-time defending PSAC-Western Division champion California U. of Pa. in a four-game series April 4-5..
The twinbill vs. Gannon marked SRU's first live game action since March 15, but The Rock offense showed little signs of rust as the hosts pounded out 22 hits in the two games, 12 in Game 1 and 10 in Game 2.
Junior right fielder
Scott Bender led The Rock attack with a 6-for-8 day at the plate that included three Game 2 doubles and earned him a trio of RBIs.
His third Game 2 double set the table for Herman's game-winning basehit and completed a Rock comeback from a 3-1 deficit after one and a half innings of action.
Sophomore outfielder/designated hitter
Jacob Oswalt added four hits on the day, highlighted by a 3-for-3 effort in Game 1.
Sophomore catcher
Matt Adams was also 3-for-3 in the opening game, highlighted by a three-run home run and a double. Senior left fielder
Matt Messer and senior center fielder #M.J. Parsons# each added a double in Game 1.
Junior shortstop
Rich Michalek was 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in Game 2.
Junior southpaw
Sean Holliday was SRU's Game 1 starting and winning pitcher. He allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits, struck out five and walked four in four innings of work.
Freshman southpaw
Brett Vescovi allowed one earned run on one hit, struck out one and walked one in two innings before junior right-hander
Don Pugliese struck out two in a scoreless and hitless seventh inning to close out Game 1.
Senior righty and team co-captain
Mike DeCola picked up the win in Game 2 after he struck out all three batters to face him in the top of the seventh inning.
Game 2 starter
Vince Lloyd, a sophomore righty, allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits, struck out four and walked five in the first three innings before sophomore righty
Justin Thomas fanned three and walked one in three scoreless and hitless innings of work.
Rock pitchers hit seven batters in the course of Tuesday's action and have now plunked 25 batters in 15 games this spring.
