FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- The Rock snapped a modest two-game losing streak Friday with a methodical 5-1, 16-5 doubleheader sweep of Nyack College (N.Y.) at the Bob Gladwin Baseball Complex.
The sweep gives SRU a 7-5 record heading into Saturday's 8:45 a.m. nine-inning single game vs. Post University that will conclude the Green and White's spring-break trip to the Sunshine State.
Senior center fielder #M.J. Parsons lined an RBI single and sophomore second baseman Billy Messer# slapped a two-run single to key a three-run Rock outburst in the bottom of the first inning to jumpstart SRU's Game 1 effort.
Sophomore right fielder Jacob Oswalt walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on junior third baseman Billy Herman's sacrifice fly to extend The Rock lead to 4-0 in the third inning.
Oswalt also scored the fifth and final Rock run as he walked, moved to second on a single by junior right fielder Scott Bender and trotted home as part of a successful double steal by him and Bender in the fifth inning.
Bender, who had two singles, was the only Rock player to have more than one hit in the game as The Rock managed only five hits.
Bender had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and collected two RBIs in Game 2. He was one of six Rock players to record two or more hits and one of four players to collect two or more RBIs in the game.
Junior shortstop Rich Michalek was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and four RBIs to lead The Rock's Game 2 attack. Junior second baseman Kyle Smith had two hits, including a bases-loaded triple, while Herman also had two hits and picked up two RBIs.
Freshman catcher Derek Diruscia and rookie third baseman Anthony Heaps each added a pair of hits and one RBI and senior first baseman Scott Hugney had a double.
The 16-hit attack matched SRU's season-best total recorded in a season-opening 13-12 win at Shepherd (W. Va.), while the 16 runs is the high-water mark of the season.
Junior righthander Justin Dickert pitched a complete game for The Rock in Game 1. He allowed one earned run on five hits, struck out six and walked two en route to his second win in as many decisions this spring.
Dickert's route-going effort was the second recorded this spring by a Rock pitcher.
Sophomore southpaw Sean Holliday evened his season record at 1-1 with the win in Game 2. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits, struck out six and walked four in four and one-third innings.
Freshman righty Justin Thomas relieved Holliday and allowed one hit and struck out two in one and two-thirds innings before freshman righty Jim Hughes yielded one hit and struck out one in the final frame.
The Rock, after meeting Post on Saturday, is scheduled to visit Ohio Valley University (W. Va.) on Tuesday and open its home schedule Wednesday with a 1 p.m. twinbill vs. Wheeling Jesuit at Jack Critchfield Park.
