COCOA BEACH, Fla. -- Stacey Rhoades had a 3-for-3 game at the plate with two home runs, picked up three RBIs and tossed a one-hit shutout and Jessica Kortz added a solo HR to lead The Rock to an 11-0 "mercy rule" whitewashing of Division III University of New England in the first game of Tuesday's twinbill.

But the Division II Rock could not complete the sweep as New England salvaged a split by recording a 3-1 win in Game 2.

The split gives SRU a 5-1 record this spring.

Rhoades' two-run home run with one out in the top of the first inning proved to be the game-winning hit in Game 1. She added a solo HR in the third before she had a leadoff single, stole second and scored the first of five Rock runs in the fifth frame.

The five fifth-inning tallies brought a premature end to the game in accordance with the "mercy rule."

Kortz followed Rhoades' first-inning roundtripper with a solo blast of her own to complete a three-run Rock outburst to open the game and added an RBI single in the fifth to finish as one of three Rock players who had two hits in the game.

Shardea Croes slapped an RBI single in the second inning and stroked a run-scoring triple in the fourth frame, while Jordan Zeunges singled and scored on Croes' RBI single and added a single in the fifth inning.

Rhoades struck out four batters in five innings to pick up her second pitching win of the season and record the third straight shutout pitched by a Rock hurler.

She got ample offensive support as The Rock pounded out 12 hits in the game.

The Rock should have saved some of that offense for Game 2.

SRU managed only four hits in the nightcap and wasted three scoring opportunities before finally scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.

The Rock manufactured its run from a leadoff single by #Alicia Dixon#, a double by Meghan McHenry and a double play ground out by Kortz.

That tally proved to be insufficient to secure the victory, though, because SRU committed three errors in the top of the sixth inning that opened the door to three unearned runs by New England.

Sheree Horvath was the hard-luck loser pitcher for SRU. She scattered four hits, struck out nine and walked one in suffering the loss in her first decision of the season.

SRU is idle Wednesday before taking on Division III New England College in a 7 p.m. twinbill Thursday in Cocoa Beach.
