Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score
Edinboro, Pa. -
Edinboro University pitchers held The Rock scoreless and allowed only eight hits in two games Friday to record a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader sweep.
The Rock (10-10 overall, 0-2 PSAC-W) had six hits in Game 1 before it was held to only two hits in Game 2, which was halted after five innings in accordance with the "mercy rule."
SRU will look to bounced back on Saturday, when it hosts PSAC-West rival Indiana U. of Pa. in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the SRU softball complex.
Stacey Rhoades accounted for half of The Rock's Game 1 offense Friday as she had a double and two singles. Jessica Kortz also had a double, while Alicia Dixon recorded a pair of singles.
Rock starting and losing pitcher Courtney Conron (4-4) allowed five earned runs on nine hits and struck out four in the first four innings. Sheree Horvath allowed two hits, struck out one and walked one in the final two frames.
The Rock's only serious scoring threat came in the first inning when Rhoades was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a single by Dixon. Rhoades had opened the game with a single and moved to second on a passed ball to set up the play at the plate.
Rhoades was back in scoring position in the fourth inning, thanks to her two-out double, but was stranded by a strikeout.
Rhoades' third hit of the game, with two outs in the fifth frame, moved Kim Weindel (who had reached on an error) into scoring position, but a line out ended the threat.
The Rock also had a runner on second base with two outs in the top of the first inning of Game 2, thanks to a single by Courtney Vincent and a ground out, but could not push the potential run across the plate. A called third strike left the runner stranded at second.
Edinboro then blew the game wide open with six runs on six hits and one Rock error in the bottom of the first inning.
SRU got its final hit of the game and staged its only other Game 2 scoring threat in the top of the second inning when Emily Novitsky slapped a one-out double. A strikeout and a foul out left her stranded there, though.
Rhoades (1-1), making only her second mound appearance of the season, allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and walked one batter in the first one-third of an inning.
Lisa Getgen relieved Rhoades and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits, struck out two and walked one in the first 4 1/3 innings.
The Rock, after hosting Indiana on Saturday, will travel to Shepherd (W. Va.) for a rescheduled doubleheader on Sunday, then host Seton Hill in a 2:30 p.m. twinbill Wednesday.
