Box Score
Washington, D.C. -
Jessica Kortz smacked a pair of home runs and Stacey Rhoades added a solo shot Saturday afternoon, but the blasts didn't generate enough firepower to lead The Rock to victory.
Hosting Howard University, an NCAA Division I member institution, recorded 5-2 and 13-10 wins over the Division II Rock to drop SRU's season record to 6-8.
Saturday's games were a case of what might have been for The Rock.
SRU held a 10-9 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2, only to see Howard score four runs in its last at-bat to snatch away the victory.
SRU had the potential winning run at bat three times in the top of the seventh inning of Game 1 but failed to convert on a bases-loaded, no-pout opportunity.
The Rock will look to bounce back and return to the .500 mark when it takes on Bowie State in Maryland on Sunday (noon start).
Kortz clobbered a three-run home run in Saturday's second game after hitting a solo shot in the first game.
Rhaodes had a single in Game 2 after going 2-for-4, including the HR, in Game 1.
Amber Phillips collected four hits on the day, two in each game. Kortz, Courtney Vincent and Stephanie Spisak had two hits each.
Like Kortz, Vincent had one hit in each game. She also stole two bases Saturday to increase her season total to 14, two shy of the school record.
Spisak was 2-for-4 in Game 1.
Lisa Getgen was tagged with the Game 2 loss in relief of starter Courtney Conron. Sheree Horvath was SRU's Game 1 starting and losing pitcher.
After taking on Bowie State on Sunday, The Rock will turn it attention to Tuesday's scheduled doubleheader vs. Ursuline. Weather permitting, the 3:30 p.m. will be the first home games played by SRU this spring.
