California, Pa. -
NCAA Division II East Regional power California U. of Pa. exercised its muscle Monday night and handed The Rock a 79-56 loss in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action.
Jamar Scales scored a team-high 13 points and handed out five assists for SRU, while Glenn Reepmeyer added 10 points and team-best five rebounds.
The Rock (4-16 overall, 1-4 PSAC-West) will seek to snap a six-game losing streak on Wednesday, when it will host division rival Clarion (6-12, 1-4) in an 8 p.m. game in Morrow Field House.
The Rock and Clarion are currently tied for sixth place in the PSAC-West; the loser of Wednesday's game will fall into the division cellar.
SRU hung with California (16-3, 5-0) -- the PSAC-West leader and No. 2 team in the most recent regional poll -- for the first half of the opening 20 minutes of action before the Vulcans began to pull away.
The Rock and Vulcans were deadlocked at 18-18 after nine minutes of action. California then scored 12 of the next 13 points to take an 11-point (30-19) lead with 4:30 left before halftime.
The Vulcans' advantage at the intermission was six points, 35-29.
A 21-11 run by the hosts in the first eight and half minutes of the second half pushed the advantage to 16 points (56-40). California never led by less than 14 points thereafter.
After hosting Clarion on Wednesday, The Rock travels to Lock Haven (8-11, 2-3) for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, then entertains Edinboro (13-7, 3-2) in an 8 p.m. game next Wednesday (Feb. 7).
The Rock beat Lock Haven by a 79-60 margin in Slippery Rock on Jan. 10 and lost an 87-59 decision at Edinboro one week later.
Clarion recorded its first PSAC-West win of the season Wednesday when it handed Edinboro a 75-67 setback.
