Rock suffers second successive narrow loss, 96-92 in OT at Mansfield

Mansfield, Pa. - The Rock sustained its second heartbreaking loss in as many days Sunday as hosting Mansfield won a tooth-and-nail battle, 96-92, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action.

The loss dropped The Rock's overall record to 4-12 and gave the Green and White a 1-6 mark in this year's conference crossover series.

Mansfield, which had snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday with a win over defending PSAC champion Edinboro, now owns a 4-10 record.

SRU returns to action on Wednesday, when it will travel to Edinboro for a 7:30 p.m. PSAC-Western Division game.

Glenn Reepmeyer led The Rock effort on Sunday as he recorded his sixth "double-double" of the season with team-high totals of 21 points and 16 rebounds, He played 42 of a possible 45 minutes in the game and was called for four personal fouls.

That latter statistic is significant in light of the fact that SRU lost four players to personal fouls in a game that featured 59 personal fouls and 76 free throw attempts.

Jamar Scales contributed 20 points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists before fouling out with 1:37 left to play in regulation time and SRU holding a 77-74 lead.

Matt Schaefer scored 16 points and had four rebounds and four assists before he exited the game with 0:54 left to play in regulation time (SRU leading 77-75).

Joseph Vines had 11 points, four rebunds and three steals before he left with 1:47 to play in overtime (Mansfield leading 88-86).

Erroll Robinson scored eight points and had five rebounds and five assists before he left on an offensive foul with 0:04 left to play in regulation time (scored tied 80-80).

The Rock was called for 32 personal fouls, five more than Mansfield, which had only two players DQ'ed.

Neither team took full advantage of its charity toss opportunities, as The Rock made 21 of 37 attempts (56.8%) and Mansfield hit 23 of 39 (59.0%).

From the field, SRU shot a very respectable 55.0% (33 of 60), while the Mounties hit 46.4% (32 of 69). Mansfield outscored SRU from 3-point range as it hit nine treys compared to five for The Rock.

Riding on the broad shoulders of Reepmeyer, SRU had a 43-34 advantage in rebounds, but was on the short end of a 24-18 comparison in turnovers.

The largest lead of the game was a nine-point (20-11) Rock advantage with 11 minutes left to play in the opening half.

The score was tied for the second time in the game when the teams ended the first 20 minutes of action deadlocked at 35-35.

The 11th tie of the second half came with 0:07 left in regulation time when Mansfield's Chris Pender scored on an offensive rebound to knot the score at 80-80.

The 12th and final deadlock was an 84-84 stalemate with 3:30 left in overtime, a point from which Mansfield outscored SRU by a 12-8 margin.

Sunday's game was The Rock's third overtime contest of the season and third vs. a PSAC-East rival. The Rock is now 1-2 in OT games after beating West Chester (96-89) in one extra period and losing to Kutztown (95-88) in two OTs.
