Slippery Rock, Pa. -
Brandon McQuillen recorded his third shutout in four games this fall and Ed Mocarsky scored a goal and had an assist Saturday afternoon to lead The Rock to a 4-0 win over Shippensburg.
The win improved The Rock's overall and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference records to 3-1.
The win moved SRU, the defending conference champion, back into sole possession of first place in the PSAC. The Rock entered Saturday's game tied with California U. of Pa. for the top spot; California was idle on Saturday.
Shippensburg fell to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in PSAC play.
McQuillen was credited with six saves Saturday as The Rock outshot their guests by a 21-17 margin overall and by a 10-6 margin in shots on goal.
The teams battled to a scoreless stalemate in the first 45 minutes of action before The Rock found the net four times in the second half.
Rajan Phanda scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 47th minute of action off an assist from Mocarsky.
Mocarsky then made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the 57th minute of action. The goal was his team-best third of the season.
Freshmen Ben Hauber (assisted by Justin Riggle) and Lucas Feathers (assist to Jeremy Deighton) scored the third and fourth goals, respectively.
The Rock returns to action on Thursday, when it will host California U. of Pa. in a rematch of last year's PSAC championship game.
SRU won its first conference title in 31 seasons a year ago with a 1-0 triumph at California.
