The Rock suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon as hosting West Chester scored a 2-1 win in a battle of the top two teams in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional poll.
West Chester. the No. 1 team in the latest NSCAA regional poll and No. 6 team in the NSCAA national poll, scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute of play.
Mallory Neubert tied the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal in the 40th minute of action before West Chester (6-0) got the winning goal in the 70th minute.
Rock goalie Lauren McManus recorded 11 saves in the game as West Chester outshot SRU by a 13-3 margin.
The Rock, which was ranked second in the region and 14th nationally in the latest NSCAA polls, will put its 7-1 overall record on the line Thursday. SRU hosts Bloomsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" game on James W. Egli Soccer Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
The Rock currently leads the PSAC-Western Division with a 5-0 record and will start the second half of divisional play next Sunday, Aug. 24, with a 2 p.m. duel against Lock Haven.
