The Rock recorded one of its most impressive wins in many seasons Saturday when it defeated nationally ranked and defending Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion California U. of Pa., 3-1, in Morrow Field House.
The Rock won the first game by as 30-28 score, dropped the second game 30-28 and won Games 3 and 4 by 30-24 and 30-28 scores, respectively, to improve its season record to 11-3 and even its PSAC-Western Division mark at 1-1.
California, which received votes in last week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II national poll, fell to 8-3, 1-1.
Anastasia Urbanik led The Rock effort with 20 kills, nine blocks, eight digs and one service ace.
Katie Greco added 14 kills, three blocks and one ace, while Jen Blasko and Louise Schultz had 10 kills each. Blasko had 20 digs, three blocks and one ace and Schultz recorded two aces.
Sara Kirsch chalked up 53 assists, 11 digs and one ace; Caitlin Hubbard had 17 digs and two aces and Gwen Oberlin tied Blasko for the team lead with 20 digs.
The Rock will look to carry the momentum of Saturday's win into and through Tuesday's 7 p.m. match with Edinboro in Morrow Field House.
Note: Saturday's match was the first home event of the season for SRU, which played initial 13 matches on the road this fall ... The Rock is having its best season since 1993, when SRU won 17 of its first 19 matches en route to a best-ever 40-6 final record and the PSAC and regional championships.
