Slippery Rock, Pa. -
The Rock softball team saw its season come to a close Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of contests to PSAC-West rival Indiana by 8-0 and 9-6 scores.
IUP ace Jodie Swavely fired a one-hitter for the visitors in game one, while Indiana's offense smacked eight hits in rolling to an easy 8-0 victory in a game shortened by the "mercy rule".
Laura Campbell recorded the lone Rock hit in the game, a double in second inning.
Jenna Frieling earned the loss on the mound, dropping her record to 6-11 on the season. Frieling struck out three batters over six innings of work and allowed three earned runs.
The Rock's defense committed two errors in the game.
In game two, the Rock bats came alive, with Kayla Ray and Stacey Rhoades bombing back-to-back solo home runs in the first inning to put The Rock up 2-0.
A Lisa Getgen solo shot in the second inning would give The Rock a 3-0 cushion, but Indiana would answer with three runs of their own in the fifth inning to put the visitors on top 4-3.
The Rock would score three more runs in the sixth, but came up short, in losing 9-6.
Ray led the Rock's offensive attack, going three-for-four with one RBI, while Meghan McHenry doubled and singled, driving in a run.
Picking up the loss on the mound was Getgen, who threw five innings and allowed four hits, while striking out two. Getgen ends the season with a 6-5 record.
The contests were the last in the careers of Rock seniors Niki Banner and Campbell, both of whom were four-year memebers of the squad.
The Rock finishes the season with a 20-24 overall record and a 6-14 mark in PSAC-West action. This season also marked the first time in Rock history that the team recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons.
