California, Pa. - The Rock softball team saw its hopes of earning its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoff berth for the first time since the 1984 season get shattered, dropping both ends of a twinbill against California Friday afternoon.

In game one action, the homestanding Vulcans limited The Rock to only three hits, and took advantage of two Rock errors.

Jenna Frieling struck out three California batters and scattered seven hits over six innings of work, in picking up the loss on the mound.

Kayla Ray, Niki Banner and Andrea Murdock all singled for The Rock in the loss.

In the nightcap, The Rock battled California for 10 hard fought innings, but eventually succumbed by a 6-5 score.

The Rock bats pounded out nine hits in the game, led by a three-for-five, four-RBI performance from Stacey Rhoades, including a double and a three-run home run in the 3rd inning.

Meghan McHenry also smacked three hits for The Rock, while Andrea Murdock singled twice.

Frieling earned the tough loss on the mound, hurling three complete innings and allowing three hits and two unearned runs. Frieling now falls to 6-10 on the season.

The losses drop The Rock to 20-22 overall and 6-12 in PSAC-West action on the year.

The Rock will play their final contests of the year tomorrow when they entertain PSAC-West rival Indiana in a twinbill slated for 1:00 p.m. The game will be the last in a Rock uniform for seniors Niki Banner and Laura Campbell, both of whom have been four-year members of The Rock squad.
