Vienna, W. Va. -
Jamar Scales pumped in a team-high 24 points and Brandon Thompson added 23 Tuesday night to lead The Rock effort in an offensive shootout at Ohio Valley University.
When the smoke cleared, though, The Rock had sustained its second straight loss and fifth setback in seven games this winter, 106-97.
The Rock is now idle until Dec. 16, when it will meet Northwood (Mich.) in the opening round of the Mercyhurst tournament in Erie.
Kenny Smith chipped in 15 points for SRU in Tuesday night's game, which saw five players finish with 10 or more points.
Erroll Robinson added 13 points and Glenn Reepmeyer 10 points.
The Rock never led in the first half of action, but did tie the score on three separate occasions -- the final one at 44-44 with 3:13 left before intermission.
Ohio Valley took a four-point, 54-50, lead into the break before SRU scored the first five points of the second half to take its first lead of the game, 55-54, less than a minute into the final 20 minutes.
The Rock held two more one-point leads (72-71 and 74-73) and was deadlocked with OVU at 83-83 with 7:15 left to play.
The hosts then ran off a string of 11 unanswered points to take a 94-83 advantage (4:30) the Green and White would not be able to overcome.
