Junior wingman Brandon Thompson scored a team-high 16 points Sunday night to lead The Rock effort in a 95-57 season-opening loss at NCAA Division I Youngstown State (2-2).
Senior postman Glenn Reepmeyer added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds for SRU, while junior-college transfer guard Kenny Smith chipped in 10 points off the bench in his first Rock game.
The Rock and Penguins played on even terms for the first two minutes of action Sunday night and were deadlocked at 4-4 before YSU took command of the action.
The hosts outscored SRU by a 41-17 margin to take a 45-21 lead into intermission and extended their lead to as many as 40 points, 95-55, with just 46 seconds left to play.
The Rock shot 39 percent (23 of 59) from the field, 40 percent (8 of 20) from 3-point range and a frigid 50 percent (3 of 6) from the foul line in the game.
SRU and first-year interim head coach Jamala Palmer will seek their first win of the season on Tuesday, when it travels to Glenville State for a non-conference game.
The Rock's home opener is Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" rival West Chester in Morrow Field House.
