Kutztown, Pa. -
Jamar Scales scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Sunday afternoon but the effort went for naught as The Rock dropped a 90-85 decision in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action in Keystone Arena.
Scales, who made 13 of 22 shots from the field, was one of three Rock players who scored 18 or more points in the game. Both Matt Hale and Brandon Thompson finished the game with 18 points.
Thompson also grabbed eight rebounds for The Rock, which suffered its 14th straight loss and saw its season record fall to 1-15.
The Rock will seek to end the skid on Wednesday when it hosts defending conference champion Edinboro in an 8 p.m. PSAC-Western Division game in Morrow Field House.
Kutztown improved its season record to 10-6.
The Rock jumped out to a quick 13-3 lead after four minutes of action before Kutztown responded with an 11-0 run in the next two minutes to take back the lead, 14-13.
Kutztown extended its lead to eight points on two occasions in the final 14 minutes of the first half, only to have The Rock rally to trim the deficit to three (48-45) at halftime.
The Rock continued its comeback in the first three minutes of the second half as SRU scored the first six points of the final stanza to take a 51-48 lead with 17:30 left in the game.
The teams traded spurts and leads in the next 13 minutes before Kutztown took the lead for good, 77-75, with 4:15 left.
The largest Kutztown leads in the final four-plus minutes were a pair of six-point advantages.
Notes: Scales' double-double effort Sunday gave him a total of 76 points and 23 rebounds in three games during the week and should earn him a solid shot at earning PSAC "Athlete of the Week" honors. He shot 66 percent (33 of 50) from the field, 50 percent (2-4) from 3-point range and 75 percent (8-12) from the foul line ... The double-double by Scales was only the second recorded by a Rock player this winter. Dejan Jancic had 17 points and 13 rebounds on Dec. 21, 2005, in a loss to Bloomsburg ... The losses to West Chester (53-48) and Kutztown on back-to-back days increased to seven the number of games The Rock has lost this winter by six or less points.
