Jamar Scales exploded for a season-high 34 points Wednesday night to headline The Rock effort in an 85-75 loss to visiting California U. of Pa. in the opening game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division schedule.
Scales' point total is the highest by a Rock player since Glenn Reepmeyer scored 36 points in a win at Lock Haven University on Feb. 12, 2005.
Scales also led The Rock in rebounding with five.
Erroll Robinson was the only other Rock player to score 10 or more points in Wednesday's game; he finished with 11 points.
The Rock held a nine-point, 19-10, advantage six minutes into Wednesday's game before California (10-3, 1-0) scored 18 of the next 27 points to tie the score at 28-29 with 7:30 left in the opening half.
SRU never led in the final 27:30 of action, but trailed by only four points (44-40) at halftime and kept the deficit in single digits until the final three minutes.
Wednesday's loss was the 12th straight for The Rock (1-13, 0-1), who will seek to snap the skid on Saturday when they visit West Chester (7-5) for a PSAC "crossover" game. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.

The Rock will then conclude the seven-game PSAC interdivision series on Sunday at Kutztown (9-5). Tipoff is also set for 3 p.m. that day.
SRU returns home next Wednesday, Jan. 18, to entertain Edinboro in an 8 p.m. PSAC-West contest.
