Furlan's goal gives Rock 1-0 win over Millersville

Sept. 24, 2005

Final Stats

Slippery Rock, Pa. - Matt Furlan converted an assist from Jeff Hamley into the game's only goal Saturday afternoon as The Rock cashed a gut check against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Millersville on James W. Egli Field.

Furlan's goal came in the 50th minute of action and allowed The Rock to improve its overall record to 4-5-1 and its PSAC mark to 4-3-1.

Hidden in the final statistics is the reasoning for the "gut check" reference: The Rock played the final 42-plus minutes with a one-man disadvantage.

Shaun Reid was slapped with a double-yellow card penalty at the 27:07 mark of the game, which left The Rock a man down from that point on.

Seven saves by Rock goalie Chris Cook, coupled with a Rock-solid effort by his defensive partners, played a major role in The Rock's ability to record its second shutout of the season.

Millersville (3-4-1, 2-4-1) outshot The Rock by an 18-7 margin, but was unable to find the back of the net.

SRU returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday, when it will host Pitt-Johnstown in a non-conference game on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
