Rock takes two from Gannon via forfeits

Erie, Pa. --

The Rock improved its record to 13-1 Wednesday when it was awarded a pair of wins via forfeit from hosting Gannon University.

The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but the games were not played.

The games was forfeited to The Rock in the wake of disciplinary action taken against team members by Gannon athletic director Griz Zimmerman.

The Rock knew prior to its arrival in Erie that, if weather conditions permitted the playing of games on Wednesday, SRU would be awarded the first-game win.

Wednesday's second-game forfeit win was unexpected and was not awarded until The Rock was prepared for actual game competition.

The games will be recorded as 7-0 and 9-0 wins for The Rock. The difference in scores is due to the nature of the games.

Normally, each game of a doubleheader is seven innings in length. Thus, in accordance with baseball rules that award the winning team in a forfeited game one run for every inning of the scheduled game, the first game was awarded as a 7-0 victory.

By mutual agreement of the two teams, and in the wake of the earlier decision to have the first game recorded as a forfeit, the second game was scheduled to be a nine-inning contest. Thus, the 9-0 final score.

There will be no individual or team statistics associated with Wednesday's games, but the wins and losses will be official parts of each team's season results.

The Rock, ranked eighth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America national poll and 13th by Collegiate Baseball magazine, is scheduled to travel to Mansfield on Thursday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Marauders, weather permitting. There is a chance, however, that those games will instead by played at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock.

SRU and Mansfield are also scheduled to play at doubleheader Friday at Critchfield Park.

Fans are encouraged to stay tuned to The Rock Sports Hotline (724-738-2962) and/or www.rockathletics.com for updates on the status of Thursday and Friday's games.

If the games are played Thursday and/or Friday, they will be broadcast on the Internet, and may also be broadcast on WLER-FM (97.7) in Butler.
