Bill Johnson scored a game-high 23 points to lead The Rock effort in a 75-62 loss at California U. of Pa. (10-3, 1-0) on the opening night of PSAC-Western Division action.
Johnson scored 21 of his points in the first half to pace SRU (1-13, 0-1) to a 39-37 halftime edge, but he and his teammates could not sustain the effort.
The 20-plus-point scoring effort was Johnson's sixth in the last seven games, seventh in the last nine outings and eighth in 14 games this winter.
Glenn Reepmeyer added 15 points and seven rebounds Wednesday night for The Rock, while Jason Bratten scored nine points and Mason Glick handed out eight assists.
SRU led for most of the first half of action en route to its halftime advantage, and lengthened its lead to seven points (44-37) a minute and a half into the final stanza.
California outscored SRU by a 17-9 margin in the next six minutes to take the lead for good at the 12-minute mark (54-53) and pulled away from there.
The Rock will host West Chester at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Kutztown at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the final two games of the PSAC "crossover" series.
