Slippery Rock, Pa. -
The 16th-ranked Rock women's soccer team improved its record to 2-0 Friday night with a 3-1 win over visiting Bridgeport (1-1) in a crucial NCAA Division II Northeast Regional match on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
The Rock held a 1-0 lead at halftime on the strength of an unassisted goal by senior All-America forward Sarah Arsenault at the 31:05 mark.
The goal was Arsenault's third of the season.
Bridgeport tied the score at 1-1 in the 55th minute on a goal by sophomore forward Rut Bjarnadottir off a corner kick.
Freshman Jayme Timmons answered that tally with her first goal of the season, an unassisted score, three minutes after Bjarnadottir's goal to account for the eventual winning point.
The Rock's final goal was an unassisted tally by redshirt senior Emma Wright at the 62:19 mark.
The goal was Wright's first as a Rock player; she is a transfer from Division I Central Connecticut State.
SRU freshman goalie Karrine Riggins was credited with five saves, while Bridgeport sophomore netminder Allison Verobel had 12 saves.
The Rock outshot Bridgeport by a 19-12 margin.
SRU will host Molloy (N.Y.) College at noon on Sunday on James W. Egli Field.
