Slippery Rock, Pa. -
Redshirt freshman southpaw Colin Scott pitched a four-hit shutout in the second game of Monday's non-conference doubleheader to lead The Rock to a split vs. Gannon.
The Rock lost a 4-1 decision in the first game before it won a 5-0 decision in the nightcap.
SRU is now 22-18 overall, while Gannon is 16-16.
The Rock returns to action on Saturday when it will travel to Lock Haven for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader.
SRU took a quick 1-0 lead in the first game on the strength of a leadoff double by senior center fielder Matt Kozusko and an RBI single by senior third baseman Chase Rowe.
That would wind up being the only run of the game for The Rock, which left nine runners on base. The Rock had runners in scoring position in the second, fourth and sixth innings but failed to get the key hit.
Those stranded runners came back to haunt The Rock when Gannon scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning and a single tally in the fifth.
Junior first baseman Aaron Levonick had two of The Rock's six hits in the first game.
Junior right-hander Nick Armstrong pitched a seven-inning complete game but was tagged with his second loss in four decisions this spring. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits, struck out seven and walked four.
As in the first game, The Rock scored a run in the bottom of the first inning of the second game. This time, though, SRU got key hits and added four tallies in the fourth frame.
The Rock "manufactured" its first run from a pair of bases on balls, a dropped fly ball in the outfield and a run-scoring wild pitch.
SRU got its second run off a walk, a stolen base, a single by Levonick and a successful safety squeeze bunt attempt by senior second baseman Trent Berner.
Freshman designated hitter Phil Butch and Kozusko had RBI singles to push across the third and fourth Rock runs before a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Nathan Statzer plated the final run.
Kozusko had a pair of hits to lead a five-hit Rock attack in the second game.
Scott struck out six and walked three in a complete-game pitching effort to improve his record to 3-1.
