Shepherdstown, W. Va. -
Senior third baseman Chase Rowe and junior left fielder Dave Gonos swung mighty bats to lead The Rock to a 7-3 second-game win over hosting Shepherd College (10-13) that gave SRU (19-9) a sweep of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Gonos had a pair of hits, including his second home run of the season, a three-run shot in the top of the fifth inning, and accounted for four of The Rock's RBIs.
Rowe, who had three hits in the first game (a 13-7 Rock triumph), added three more in the second game to lead a seven-hit Rock attack. Rowe finished the day with a 6-for-10 showing, four runs scored and two RBIs.
As was the case in the first game, when The Rock scored eight times in the top of the first inning, SRU took early and firm control of Tuesday's second game.
An RBI single by Rowe keyed a four-run Rock rally in the top of the first inning of the nightcap.
Shepherd narrowed the margin to 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the second and a lone tally in the third before The Rock iced the win with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Gonos' home run came after two outs had been recorded and accounted for all The Rock's fifth-inning tallies. Gonos also had an RBI single in the first inning.
Sophomore right-hander Adam Ritts was The Rock's starting and winning pitcher. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, struck out two and walked one in six innings. Redshirt freshman southpaw Colin Scott allowed one hit and struck out one in the final inning.
The Rock is idle until Friday when it will travel to nationally ranked Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader. The same two teams meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock.
