Rock rolls past Shepherd, 13-7

Shepherdstown, W. Va. - The Rock exploded for eight first-inning runs Tuesday and never looked back en route to a 13-7 win over hosting Shepherd College (10-12) in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader.

SRU (18-9) pounded out 20 hits in the game, led by a 5-for-5 effort by senior shortstop Nathan Statzer.

Statzer accounted for The Rock's final two first-inning tallies when he hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot.

Senior left fielder Ben Marzullo accounted for four RBIs, three of which came on a first-inning home run (his team-high fifth HR of the season). He also got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second inning.

Senior designated hitter Joe Pascarella was 4-for-5 including a two-run single in the first inning and a double in the fourth inning.

Senior third baseman Chase Rowe was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Derek Blyzwick (3-2) was The Rock starting and winning pitcher. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits, struck out six and walked two in six innings. Scott Rice allowed one hit and struck out two in the final inning.

The Rock added two runs in the second inning to take a 10-0 lead before Shepherd scored its first run in the bottom of the third. Both teams scored a pair of runs in the fifth before the hosts got four runs in the sixth to narrow the gap to 12-7. The Rock scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh.
