Box Score
Philippi, W. Va. -
Hosting Alderson-Broaddus scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday and then held off a last-inning Rock rally to hand SRU a 5-3 setback in an NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional regular-season duel.
The loss gave The Rock, which had begun the season ranked seventh in the nation, a 2-2 record after its opening weekend of action.
Four Rock errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball opened the door to four unearned runs by the Battlers and spelled doom for SRU.
Offensively, The Rock had nine hits. Senior shortstop Nathan Statzer, junior designated hitter Billy Wolfe and senior first baseman Aaron Levonick had a pair of hits each.
Freshman right-hander Scott Rice was the hard-luck losing pitcher. He allowed three unearned runs on one hit and walked three in one inning of action.
Junior southpaw Jeremy Becker allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits, struck out eight and walked four in five innings of work.
The Rock is idle until Friday, March 5, when it will take on Saginaw Valley (Mich.) and Salem International (W. Va.) in a pair of single games at Terry Park in Fort Myers, Fla.
Those two games will be first of 14 spring-break games The Rock will play in Fort Myers.
